  • Isles of Scilly

Creative Scilly - Isles of Scilly

    Creative Scilly

This new cultural festival will celebrate the islands’ culture and creativity on a scale beyond anything hosted on the islands before. Building on the foundations of the long established and well-loved Art Scilly week, the Creative Scilly Festival will feature an eclectic mix of events from visual art, literature, comedy and the spoken word to hands-on workshops, demonstrations, public art displays, performances, gallery openings and fun nights out across the five islands.

The Festival will play host to a range of performers and artists from both Cornwall and further afield, complementing the rich and varied creative talents and artistic community so abundant on the islands

Just some of the highlights of the 13-day festival include performances of charming music and the spoken word by the celebrated folk quartet The Story Republicans, will be visiting various venues. Stamp and Go, who will deliver the Bishop and the Diva, a radio play telling the scandalous story set on Rosevear when the Bishop Rock lighthouse was being built; and Ed Rowe, the Kernow King, who makes another welcome return to the islands he so loves for a stand-up comedy night, a workshop at the Five Islands School and readings of his new play script. Rogue Theatre will dish up a taste of their magical and hilarious performances; celebrated Cornish novelist and writer Wyl Menmuir leads a creative writing course, and Harbottle and Jonas return to Scilly for a couple of folk concerts around the islands. Crime novelist and award-winning poet, Kate Rhodes will also be joining the festival to share her new work which is based on Scilly including the Hell Bay crime series.

Throughout the festival, there will also be a range of arts and crafts workshops led by local artists, in particular from the Phoenix Craft Studios, a co-operative of six artists and craftspeople on St. Mary’s whose work beautifully bears witness to Scilly’s untamed wildlife and landscapes.

Other highlights include the chance to join artist Sue Lewington, well known for her published sketchbooks of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, on a sketching walk, the opportunity to learn to weave at a workshop on St. Agnes with Trish Peacock of Twisted Bobbins, a “magical fish” pottery workhop with Bryher’s Alex Bagnall, a “cowbell” workshop with St. Martin’s based silver jewellery maker, Fay Page, sketching and watercolour workshops with Stephen Morris, wildlife and rockpool walks with the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, or an evening of music at the candlelit Old Town Church with talented local musicians Duo Prospero.

Paint the Day returns this year as part of Creative Scilly – as budding artists young and old, local and visiting, amateur and professional, are challenged to capture a day on Tresco (on Saturday 11th May) with the resulting masterpieces all displayed and shared at the Island Gallery, and prizes awarded to the winning entries in a number of categories.

Creative Scilly will also see the launch of “Walking stories” – five new audio books which have been specially commissioned to be best enjoyed on each of the inhabited islands. Highlights will be Piers Lewin and Wyl Menmuir’s St Agnes story and Walking with Wilkie on St. Mary’s, delivered by Jak Stringer.

Our friends at the Falcon Hotel have a special festival Beer-Fest that adds carefully curated speciality ales to the musical menu.

The 2019 guest list so far... Geoff Lakeman, Granny's Attic, Si Barron, Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer, Rob Murch & Michelle Holding, Lynne Heraud & Pat Turner, Georgia Lewis and Mick Ryan.

    What’s it all about?

The Festival welcomes numerous talented guest performers, many internationally known, who give concerts and appear in other events during the festival. Local dance sides perform, and we are delighted to welcome children from local schools, who give a dance display on Saturday morning. There are concerts, sing-arounds, sessions, a folk club, a barn dance, open-mics, fringe events, storytelling, a folk service and workshops.

    What happens?

The Falcon Hotel hosts several concerts including the ‘Cream of Cornwall and Devon’ showcase of local talent, the barn dance and workshops. The Falcon and other local venues welcome participants in impromptu music sessions

The Rugby Club is the home for singers. There are sing-arounds, a Folk Club evening, short concerts, late night sings, workshops and informal gatherings.

Children's events start with instruction in school leading to demonstration dances on Bark House Green. They are provided at no cost to schools or parents.

St Michael’s Church has wonderful acoustics and hosts daily open-mic sessions. This is a great place to listen, for free, to the great talent the festival attracts and have a coffee and home-made cake or a light-bite lunch in support of church funds. There is a non-denominational folk service on Sunday.

This friendly Festival has always had a “joining-in” ethos. We are grateful to the core of professional artists who do just that outside of their formal events. But we encourage everyone’s participation. There are workshops for musicians and singers of all abilities and a special concert on Monday showcases some of these.

In other local venues free Fringe Events feature selected quality performers.

    How can you take part?

The Festival offers weekend tickets and individual event tickets at very fair prices. Book on the WEBSITE or call 07736 374003. Camping is available at the Rugby Club for weekend season ticket holders. Local campsites and accommodation can be found through Bude TIC.

The team at Bude & Stratton Folk Festival are most grateful to their Festival Patron Jim Causley and all their guest performers, for the continuing support of Bude’s Town and County Councillors and Festival Friends. Thanks are also due to the Committee and staff of Bude Rugby Club and to the new owners of the Falcon Hotel for their commitment and encouragement.

  • Redruth

    Great Estate Festival - Redruth

    Great Estate Festival

Celebrating its third year, Cornwall’s most rambunctious garden fête will return....

....to the blossoming grounds of Scorrier House for three days of mystical mayhem and monumental madness. Combining headline artists, cabaret, burlesque, Mexican wrestling and Victorian-themed sporting events, The Great Estate is a dynamic fusion of music, art and food. Enriched with eccentric surprises and show-stopping performances, this unique festival takes place from Friday 31st May – Sunday 2nd June 2019. Tickets are on sale now via the website.

The Great Estate has announced its first wave of acts playing in the wild meadows and ancient woodland of the Scorrier House Estate. Welcoming one of British indie rock’s most celebrated bands, James will headline festival proceedings alongside Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show and Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.

Having sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, Manchester-formed band James will take to the main stage on Saturday 1st June 2019 for an exclusive South West performance. Having produced a string of huge hits over the past three decades including ‘Come Home’, ‘Sit Down’, ‘She's a Star’ and ‘Laid’, the Mancunians returned last summer with their 15th studio album, aptly titled ‘Living In Extraordinary Times’. More than familiar with the UK festival circuit having previously headlined Glastonbury and Festival Number 6, the seven-strong band are set to perform a combination of classic Nineties songs and new material.

Essex-born Sam Duckworth AKA Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. will perform at The Great Estate on Friday 31st May with a full backing band featuring drums, bass, violin, keys, flute, horn and guitar. The adventurous songwriter released his sixth studio album ‘Young Adult’ back in 2018 creating a refreshed and uplifting live show fusing new material and traditional Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. sound.

Returning to the prestigious grounds of Scorrier House, Funk and Soul icon Craig Charles will undoubtedly whip the crowd into yet another festival frenzy. No stranger to playing at The Great Estate, the one-man party machine promises a night of ‘can you dig it’ attitude and dance-floor jivin’. Following last year’s high-energy show that had the crowd dancing to the bitter end, the legendary actor, host and broadcaster will close the main stage in style on Sunday 2nd June.

Joining the list of headline acts for 2019 is New York collective Brass Against. Combining rock and edgy hip-hop, the protest band play empowering music with a political edge. Supporting Lenny Kravitz in London this year, Brass Against will undoubtedly inspire festival fans. Italian electro-swing four-piece The Swingrowers are set to play on Friday 31st May. Hailing from Palermo in Sicily, party-goers can expect a blend of dance music with the warm influences of swing from the 20s and 30s. Having played sell out shows across the US, plus a host of European gigs and UK festivals including Boomtown and Latitude, their irreverent style is set to ignite this year’s event.

Also joining main stage music bill is Plastic Mermaids – a surf-loving five-piece hailing from the Isle of Wight; London Astrobeat Orchestra – a combination of the finest West African musicians with one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the 20th Century; Wildwood Kin – An indie/folk female trio from Devon; and Crinkle Cuts – A band guaranteed to deliver a blasting of tantric funk, smooth reggae and new-wave Latin ska.

In other music news, revellers can soak up the sounds at Madame Wong’s House of Wrong. Acts secured for 2019 include Elvana - An Elvis-fronted Nirvana tribute band; Hong Kong Ping Pong Club – Fresh, funky and fun, expect an eclectic mix including everything from breaks, dub step and hip hop; Jelly Jazz – On hand to provide an evening of soul, funk, Latin, hip-hop and break-beat all with a jazz twist. Town of Cats – Brighton born, the lively nine-piece bring booty shaking beats with a mixture of Ska, Gypsy-Rock, Hip-Hop, Funk Folk and Latino; Future Dub Orchestra – Committed to pushing the musical boundaries, Future Dub Orchestra take music into new directions with influences as diverse as Electronica, Dub, D&B, Reggae and Film Music; and Hip Hop Karaoke – a chance for amateur rappers to swap the field for the stage and belt out anything from Missy Elliot to Eminem.

Transcending her obsession for 1920's to 1950's glitz & glamour, Tallulah Blue will take centre stage in Madame Wong’s House of Wrong across the weekend with sensual performances of burlesque and classic circus. Wowing crowds across the globe, this vaudevillian showgirl will be joined by Diva the Whip Lady for an added burst of racy cabaret.

Away from the colourful stages and live music performances, look out for Mexican Wrestling, Victorian Sports Day, The Grand Cinematic Experience, Vintage Car Show and The Grand Dining Experience.

Weekend Camping Tickets are currently on sale priced from £85 (plus £4.50 booking fee). Glamping options with bell tents and hobbit huts are also available.

Please note The Great Estate operates a tiered ticket system with prices changing over time. An allocation of tickets is reserved for each tier, this will close when the allocation of tickets is sold out.
