Shanty Shout Weekend - St Ives

    St Ives Shanty Town Weekend

An unforgettable weekend of sea shanty singing, from some of the best groups in the land
Twenty five of the best sea shanty groups in the land are set to descend on St Ives later this month for the 4th St Ives Shanty Shout on 22nd and 23rd November.

Coordinated by St Ives group Bamaluz Bootleggers with support from local businesses, this year’s Shout promises to be bigger and better than ever. Seven local venues, all an easy walk from each other and from the picturesque working harbour of St Ives, will host performances from Friday afternoon to late on Saturday.

The Castle Inn, the Golden Lion, the Surf Shack, the Pilchard Press, the Queen's Hotel, Beer and Bird and Bier Huis will resound with rousing tunes and magical melodies weaving lyrical stories of the sea.

In all, over 200 singers from Cornwall and beyond will be welcomed to the town, thanks to the generosity of the venues. Visitors to the Shout can expect to be captivated by adventures in the days of sail and by modern songs of work and love in seaside towns.

The powerful and poignant harmonies of Kimber's Men (all the way from Halifax, thanks to sponsorship from St Ives Holidays and St Ives BID) will once again shape enduring memories. Many favourite groups from previous years are returning including Falmouth Shout, Figurehead and Cadgwith Singers, while new groups to the festival include Lytham St Anne’s Shanty Crew and the newly formed Foghorn Three from Zennor.

Entry to all the venues is free, but every year the Shout raises money for charity (over £1600 for Cornwall Air Ambulance last year), so visitors shouldn’t be surprised to see collection buckets for this year’s nominated charity: Penhaligon’s Friends

  • Liskeard

    Liskeard Light Up - Liskeard

    Liskeard Light Up

Liskeard Lights Up is an all day event, as darkness falls the town will gather for the lights switch on, lantern parade and carols.
Liskeard Lights Up are pleased to be supported this year by FEAST, a programme to make great art happen across Cornwall.

This year the artistic team behind Liskeard Lights Up intend to create an illuminated interactive installation in the Cattle Market in Liskeard inspired by this year’s theme for our lantern procession ‘Under The Clock’.

Work is already well under way to recreate Liskeard in lanterns. Community artists Mark Gregory, Biddy Daniel, Carol Whibley and Carol Allan are working with six local schools and a range of community groups making lanterns that will join in with the lantern parade on Saturday 30th November through Liskeard. Community lantern making sessions are also taking place each Saturday at Liskerrett Community Centre from 10am to 1pm, and everyone is welcome to join in. Materials and guidance is provided free of charge. However children must be accompanied by an adult.

Exciting plans are progressing for the future developments on the Cattle Market site and our installation will be a fun interpretation of the buildings in the town and the sort of things that go on ‘Under The Clock’, our beautiful and distinctive town clock.

The installation will be erected on the Cattle Market during the Lights Up day and will be available to view as it is intended once night falls.

    What's happening on the day

Thanks to Cornwall Council there will be free parking in Liskeard’s main car parks on Saturday 30th November so you can enjoy all the fun at a leisurely pace.

11 am – 1 pm: Family Christmas Trail: Lergh Nadelik Teylu starting at Stuart House, follow a map and clues to hunt the white stag ‘helghi di an karow gwynn’ around the town. Answer simple questions in Cornish and collect stickers, then enjoy a celebratory ‘cakey tea’ at the Public Hall. Last registration at 12.30pm.

11 am – 1 pm: The Wild Hunt: An Helgh Gwyls an expedition around the town with Dando and his Dogs mummers play, singing in the Cornish language.  The final performance will be at the Public Hall during the ‘cakey tea’. All welcome.

5.30 pm: Lights Up Parade and Fireworks: Keskerdh Lugharn Ha Tanweyth  leaving from the Cattle Market Car Park, the lantern parade weaves its way through town via Pike Street and Fore Street. This year the theme is ‘Under the Clock’. Then gather outside Webb’s House, listen to the Silver Band and see the switch on of the town’s Christmas lights and a fireworks display.

6.30pm: Party: Gool Nadelik Free Yuletide party in the Public Hall. Music from the Cornish Groove Collective and Rubber Band Inner Tube. Cornish Guise dancing with Scoots Kernow. Food is supplied by the Real Junk Food Project on a pay as you feel basis and there will be a cash bar.

There is no need to book or register in advance for any of the events, just turn up!

    One and all welcome!

Celebration Of Light And Clay Event - Wheal Martyn Clay Works

China clay mining has transformed St Austell’s landscape dramatically over time. Take pride in your Cornish china clay heritage and explore this transformative effect as the Wheal Martyn clay pit, woodlands and trails undergo a very special transformation of their own.

Follow a beautiful light trail, exploring the changing landscape by torchlight. Encounter natural and industrial features adorned by light in fascinating ways, and look out for four iconic exhibits along the way. See how the latest LED technology, vivid colours and patterned displays create stunning effects on the iconic elements of Wheal Martyn, such as the waterwheel and flat rod tunnel.

Once you reach Pit View, get ready for an awe-inspiring laser light performance, projected onto the unique canvas of Wheal Martyn’s working clay pit.

Follow the path down to an immersive Woodland Wonderland UV experience. Draw with light on glow frames, or sit for a moment on a UV sofa, hung with lights, and consider how ‘black light’ creates the colour around you. See the ethereal glow of UV bubbles floating in the air, and gasp as colours burst and scatter in vibrant displays. Treat yourself to some festive food and drink too!

There will be five bookable time slots per day for the laser show (Thursday 5th, Friday 6th and Saturday 7th December): 5.30pm, 6.00pm, 6.30pm, 7.00pm and 7.30pm.
