St Ives May Day is held on May bank holiday every year and is a celebration of the traditions once common in St Ives.
The event starts at midday, when the Mayor of St Ives and the Grand Bard of Gorseth Kernow choose the May queen, king, princes and princesses. This ceremony is known as the pee-whip. The name is also used to describe whistles made from sycamore that were once blown across Cornwall on May Day to signal the coming of summer. At this time, traditional “May Horns” are also blown.
During the day, the St Ives Guisers dress in mock formal clothing and perform Cornish dances. At 1pm the Mayor and Grand Bard lead a procession to the harbour area of the town. Following them are a number of people wearing flower head dresses and carrying sticks with flower decorations attached, known as “May Sticks”. Following the procession, local children dressed in red perform a maypole dance.
Like many traditions in Cornwall at this time of year, St Ives May Day celebrates the coming of summer and the end of the cold, harsh months of winter that have come before it.

Helston Flora Day
HELSTON, THE CORNISH MARKET TOWN, WHERE FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS, THE TOWNSFOLK HAVE CELEBRATED AND ENJOYED THE WONDERFUL TRADITION THAT IS FLORA DAY.
This ancient festival is usually held on 8th May. A spring festival to celebrate the end of winter and mark the arrival of the new vitality and fertility with the trees and flowers bursting into life. The houses and shops of the town are decorated with greenery and floral arrangements to express the spirit of renewal.
When the big bass drum strikes the first beat of the dance at seven in the morning, the spirit of the day is stirred and the celebrations commence. Couples dance through the streets, entering selected houses and shops to drive out the darkness of winter and bring in the light of spring.
The colourful pageant, known as Hal an Tow, tells the history of Helston with the participating characters singing about the challenge of the Spanish Armada, the English patron saint, St. George and the fight between St. Michael and the devil.

Bude Literary Festival
This year’s festival is running from Thursday 16th – Sunday 19th May 2024 with an additional Schools Programme running from Monday 13th through to Friday 17th May 2024.
We’re currently getting excited with the diverse and cultural range that will be joining us in this year’s programme with over 70 exciting events this year. We currently have a fantastic Schools Programme, where local businesses have supported a programme of free author workshops in schools to inspire and encourage hundreds of young people. This year sees a range of authors, poets, directors, podcasters and a chef providing in-school workshops. Find out more on the dedicated pages.
This year’s festival would not be possible without the support and organisation of Bude-Stratton Town Council and its dedicated team based at The Castle, our Event Programmer, Richard Wolfenden-Brown, the team at Bude Library, our team of volunteers, our local venue supporters and our local business sponsors.
Bude Literary Festival, presented by Bude-Stratton Town Council, broke box office records with demand for the 123 events, workshops, talks, walks, and competitions at an all-time high in 2023. This year we will see more inspirational authors, both local and national. A range of cultural creative minds that will take us all on a literary adventure and a host of workshops and live music events happening around the town.
There will be activities for families, competitions and a Free Family Fun Day on Sunday 19th May on The Castle lawn to celebrate the Literary Festival being in town once again. We can now announce that the quick glance guide is available to download and tickets are due to go live and on sale, both online and at Bude Library from 1st March.
