The ceremony commemorates the wishes of John Knill, a former customs officer and mayor, who in his will of 1797, required that a series of activities were to be followed every 5 years.
The ceremony was first held in 1801, overseen by John Knill himself and follows the form set out in his Will of 1797. Knill was a slightly eccentric former mayor who built his own memorial, a 15-metre granite obelisk known as Knill’s steeple, sited on the summit of Worvas hill. It was intended to be his Mausoleum but he died in London. On one side of the steeple, the painted coat of arms of Knill, with the Latin Nil Desperandum (Never Despair) is inscribed and on another, the words of Johannes Knill 1782, Resurgam (I shall arise), and, in English, I know that my Redeemer liveth.
In addition to the steeple, John Knill specified that a celebration took place every five years on St James Day (25 July). He appointed three Trustees (the Customs Officer, Vicar and Mayor) to ensure that the memorial ceremony be carried out. The Will calls for a fiddler to lead 10 dancing maids, accompanied by two widows of fishermen, seamen or tinners from the Town to the Monument. The party were then to process around the Knill Steeple, before singing the hundredth psalm. The Trustees fulfilled their duty by ensuring that the ceremony, organised on behalf of the Trustees by St Ives Town Council, took place in accordance with his wishes.
He also required that the fiddler, girls and the widows be rewarded with a token payment and lunch and that the participants were to wear white knot ribbons.
The John Knill Ceremony has taken place on the quinquennial year ever since and was last celebrated in the Summer of 2021. The local community have helped to preserve this old St Ives ceremony for over 200 years, presided over by the Knill Trustees (The Town Mayor, Customs Officer and the Vicar).

Take a walk around our unique reserve to see what the beavers have been building, including their dams and the first lodge in Cornwall in over 400 years!
Join us for a guided walk around the reserve and then relax in this tranquil place at dusk to (hopefully) see and hear the beavers in action.
During the two hour visit, we’ll show you how busy the beavers have been and teach you about their fantastic way of life as ecosystem engineers! Before the walk around the enclosure, there will be a talk to learn more about beavers. The walks will take place in the evening to ensure that you get the best opportunity to see the beavers. The animals are becoming more secretive so a sighting isn’t guaranteed.

This bi-annual regatta in the busy seaside town of Looe is a celebration of the area's fishing heritage.
Traditional Luggers, two masted sailing boats once common along the coasts of England and France, head to the historical port for the regatta. Boats will arrive in Looe during the week leading up to the event depending on weather and tide conditions.
During the regatta, the Luggers, some of which sail across the channel from France, compete in six races spread over the two days of competition. Around fifty boats, many of which were built more than a hundred years ago and lovingly restored by their owners, unfurl their sails in the harbour creating a magnificent spectacle.
Cornish luggers were the principal vessel of the Cornish fishing industry during its heyday. They were also used as privateer ships and for smuggling back the in 18th and 19th centuries when their speed and manoeuvrability became invaluable in outrunning revenue ships.
The wind it bloweth….
The weather is a fickle mistress and plays a large part in the weekends activities. Too much or too little and the programme for the weekend tends to get changed around a bit, but even if the boats don’t leave the harbour, there will be something to see.

An exhibition showcasing work by artist Robin James Sullivan. And Everything And Nothing Has Changed (2021) was an ambitious public arts and heritage project by Robin James Sullivan that explored how landscapes hold memory and change. Developed across Cornwall’s China Clay Country, the project brought together over 450 participants through workshops, conversations, field trips and creative events.
The exhibition of the same name explores landscape, memory, industry and community through sculpture, performance and fieldwork. Its centrepiece is the spectacular two-metre-tall ceramic standing stone, collaboratively designed and built by local communities before being fired in a purpose-built kiln beneath the iconic Sky Tip on the edge of St Austell, just a couple miles from Wheal Martyn.

The Ultimate LEGO® History Exhibition in Cornwall This Summer
24th June – 8th September 2026
Step into history this summer at Bodmin Jail with Brick History — an extraordinary LEGO® exhibition that transforms thousands of years of world history into breathtaking brick-built scenes.
Created by internationally renowned LEGO artist Warren Elsmore and his team of expert builders, Brick History takes visitors on an unforgettable journey through the moments, people, discoveries, and revolutions that shaped our world. From Viking invasions and medieval castles to moon landings, suffragettes, and scientific breakthroughs, history is brought vividly to life brick by brick.
Set within the haunting walls of Bodmin Jail, this immersive exhibition combines creativity, storytelling, and history in one of Cornwall’s most iconic attractions.
Whether you're searching for family days out in Cornwall, things to do during the summer holidays, or a unique LEGO exhibition experience, Brick History at Bodmin Jail is one of the must-visit events of Summer 2026.

Take a walk around our unique reserve to see what the beavers have been building, including their dams and the first lodge in Cornwall in over 400 years!
Join us for a delicious barbecue, featuring locally sourced food and drinks, before a guided walk around the reserve and then relax in this tranquil place at dusk to (hopefully) see and hear the beavers in action.
During the four hour visit, after your meal, we’ll show you how busy the beavers have been and teach you about their fantastic way of life as ecosystem engineers! Before the walk around the enclosure, there will be a talk to learn more about beavers. The walks will take place in the evening to ensure that you get the best opportunity to see the beavers. The animals are becoming more secretive so a sighting isn’t guaranteed.
